It is with a heavy heart that I convey to you that our
current Metropolitan Detroit Medical Library Group (MDMLG) President, colleague
and friend, Margaret Danowski, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2022.
Margaret
was the Health Professions Librarian at Central Michigan University's Park
Library since 2019. Before working at Central Michigan University, she worked
for 23 years as an Assistant Professor and IT/Reference Librarian at Madonna
University in Livonia, MI, where she was the Liaison to the College of Nursing
and Health. In her early career, Margaret worked as a part-time librarian for a
dental supply company in Romulus, MI, as well as a library technical assistant
at the Oakland County Law Library.
Her early dream was to become an archaeologist. After completing her Bachelor’s
degree in Classical Archaeology and Cultural Anthropology (1985) at the
University of Michigan, Margaret enrolled in an art history graduate program in
North Carolina where she studied ancient art. She returned to Michigan and
worked as a serials and routing clerk at a law library in the metropolitan
Detroit area. At the urging of her supervisor, she applied to the University of
Michigan’s School of Library and Information Science, where she earned her
M.I.L.S. in 1990.
Margaret, also called Meg, will always be remembered by her MDMLG colleagues
and friends as a hard-worker with a positive disposition who was always willing
to volunteer for committees and other service work. She was a member of MDMLG’s
Nominating Committee for two years (2020-2021 & 2021-2022), Chair of the
Programming and Professional Development Committee (2021-2022), and served as
President from August 2022 until her recent passing. She added a seasoned depth
of insight, as well as a touch of humor, to our association discussions. She
will be so missed by all of us.
At this time, there are no formal services planned. However, should any plans
be announced, they will be communicated to the MDMLG membership.
