Meet the recipient of the Margaret Danowski Student Scholarship Award for 2024-2025 ā€“ Sarah Patino

Iā€™m from the Metro-Detroit area and grew up in Canton, Michigan. In 2022, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Public Health from the University of Michigan, where I focused on coursework in epidemiology, microbiology, and the social determinants of health. Currently, I am pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science at Wayne State University, with a concentration on academic and health science libraries.

My interest in health science librarianship began a few years ago at a medical research event at the University of Michigan. During the event, I visited a booth hosted by the Taubman Health Sciences Library, where they showcased their services. This encounter piqued my curiosity and led me to explore health science librarianship as a career path. Having just completed my undergraduate degree in public health and still determining how to apply my education, I found this field to be the perfect fit after further research.

Within library science, my main areas of interest are reference services and collection development. These align with my focus on academic and health science libraries in my graduate studies.

Winning this scholarship is incredibly meaningful to me for several reasons. As someone who balances full-time work with graduate studies, financial support is greatly appreciated and makes a real difference. Additionally, I see scholarships like this as an essential way to make library education more accessible, and I am honored to be a recipient.

Libraries have always been a vital part of my life. Whether checking out books for school assignments or using library resources like printers when mine was broken, libraries have consistently been there when I needed them. These positive experiences have shaped my perspective and appreciation for libraries as places of support and resourcefulness.

I find it incredibly rewarding to be the bridge that helps people access the information they need and to showcase the vast resources libraries have to offer. Helping others discover the power and potential of library services is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey in this field.
